7 Simple Habits for a Healthier Smile Every Day
A healthy smile isn't built in the dentist's chair — it's built at home, one day at a time. The good news? The habits that protect your teeth and gums are simple, affordable, and take less than 10 minutes a day.
Here are seven dentist-approved tips from the team at Western Dental Care to help you and your family maintain a healthier smile every single day.
1. Brush for a Full Two Minutes — Twice a Day
Most people brush for about 45 seconds. That's not enough. The American Dental Association recommends brushing for two full minutes, twice a day — once in the morning and once before bed.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use gentle, circular motions. Rushing through brushing is one of the most common reasons patients develop cavities and gum issues between checkups.
2. Don't Skip the Floss
Brushing only cleans about 60% of your tooth surfaces. The other 40% — the spaces between your teeth — can only be reached with floss or an interdental cleaner.
Floss at least once a day, ideally before bed. If traditional floss feels awkward, try floss picks or a water flosser. The tool matters less than the consistency. Patients who floss regularly have significantly lower rates of gum disease and cavities between teeth.
3. Watch What You Sip
Sugary and acidic drinks are among the biggest threats to your enamel. Soda, sports drinks, fruit juice, and even sparkling water can erode the protective outer layer of your teeth over time.
When you do drink something acidic or sugary, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth, and rinse with water afterward. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing — brushing immediately after an acidic drink can actually spread the acid and cause more damage.
4. Stay Hydrated with Water
Water is your mouth's best friend. It rinses away food particles and bacteria, neutralizes acids, and — if it's fluoridated tap water — actively strengthens your enamel.
San Antonio's public water supply is fluoridated, which means every glass of tap water is quietly working to protect your teeth. Aim for eight glasses a day, and make water your go-to drink between meals.
5. Replace Your Toothbrush Every 3 Months
A worn-out toothbrush doesn't clean effectively. The bristles fray and lose their ability to remove plaque from the surfaces of your teeth. Most people hold onto their toothbrush far too long.
Replace your toothbrush (or electric brush head) every three months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed. Also replace it after you've been sick — bacteria can linger on bristles and reinfect you.
6. Protect Your Teeth at Night
If you wake up with jaw soreness, headaches, or sensitive teeth, you may be grinding your teeth in your sleep — a condition called bruxism. It's more common than most people realize, and it can cause serious damage to your enamel over time.
A custom night guard from your dentist is the most effective solution. It cushions your teeth and prevents the grinding motion that wears them down. If you suspect you're grinding, mention it at your next visit — we can check for the telltale signs and fit you with a guard if needed.
7. Keep Your Twice-Yearly Dental Appointments
No amount of great home care replaces a professional cleaning and exam. Even the most diligent brushers and flossers develop tartar buildup that only a hygienist can remove. And regular exams catch small problems — a tiny cavity, early gum inflammation, a cracked filling — before they become expensive emergencies.
At Western Dental Care, we make every visit as comfortable and efficient as possible. Our team in San Antonio is here to support your oral health goals, not just treat problems after they arise.
